What do I do now?
The care guide

A sudden need for care overwhelms many families. Here is the clear way forward.

01

Recognising the need for care

Is your relative finding personal hygiene, cooking or the home difficult to manage? Are cognitive impairments becoming visible? This is the first step.

02

Apply for a care level

Submit an application to the long-term care insurance fund (form available by telephone or online). The MDK medical service then carries out an assessment at your home – free of charge. An urgent application is possible if the need is acute.

03

Get advice

Free care advice from your long-term care insurance fund (Section 7a SGB XI) – guaranteed within 2 weeks. Or directly from local providers such as Kranken- & Altenpflege Keller.

04

Select an offer

Home care at home, day care for relief or full residential care – depending on the care level and on the wishes of the person in need of care. Several services can be used at the same time.

05

Claim benefits

Care benefits in kind, care allowance, respite care, short-term care – combine your entitlements in the best possible way. Care services bill your insurance fund directly. Good to know: since July 2025 there has been a joint annual amount of up to €3,539 for respite care and short-term care (from care level 2, Section 42a SGB XI) which you can divide flexibly between the two – for example if the person who normally cares for you is unavailable.

Oral health & care –
why the two belong together

Good oral health is crucial, particularly in old age and when a person is in need of care. Inflammation in the mouth can increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes and pneumonia. People in need of care have a particularly high risk of oral disease.

Regular dental check-ups – also and especially where mobility is restricted – are an important part of holistic health care. Many dental practices now offer home visits and special care for senior citizens.
